Planning Your Backpacking Trip
What visa you are eligible to obtain depends upon what country you hail from. Most backpackers will be on either a Working Holiday or Short-term Visitor Visa (for 3 or 6 months, which can be extended?)
Working Holiday visa requirements stipulate that this visa is only available to passport holders, between the ages of 18 and 30 (incl.) and without dependent children. The following countries have a working holiday scheme with New Zealand and therefore may be eligible for a working holiday visa (usually valid for up to 2 years with a maximum of 12 months work): Argentina, Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden, United Kingdom and Uruguay.
Short-term Visitor visas are available to travellers who wish to stay in New Zealand for a period of up to 3 months. Citizens of countries with a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand do not need to apply for a short-term visa (i.e. visa waiver countries include Australia, Canada, the USA, UK, EU countries and so on).
