New Zealand’s population sits at just under 4 million people today. Its society reflects many years of migration from all parts of the globe - almost 1 in 5 living New Zealanders were born in another country and the general population has ethnic ties to more than 140 countries. The majority of migrants are of British and Irish descent, however, many are also migrants of or descendants of other European cultures such as Greece, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Dalmatia, Scandinavia and Germany. The largest non-European group of people are the Maori, the first settlers of New Zealand, known as the 'tangata whenua' (the people of the land) who make up around 10-15% of the population. Maori culture, art and traditions are an important part of New Zealand’s heritage and culture. In the past few years, people from islands throughout the Pacific, such as Samoa and Fiji, have migrated in larger numbers to New Zealand, along with immigrants from Asia, in particular, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
