Schools
In New Zealand, the school year is compressed into one calendar year. For both primary and secondary school students, the school year begins at the end of January or beginning of February and finishes about mid-December.
It is compulsory for all children aged 6 to 16 years to attend school, and given that New Zealanders place so much importance on education, the government ensures that education is available to all within this age bracket through the provision of low-cost, secular primary and secondary schools. Parents need not pay tuition at such public schools (the government pays), however, parents must be able to supply the extras, such as clothing and books.
The alternative to public schooling is sending children to a private school. Fees for these institutions vary. Many parents prefer this option to a public school, however, the government regularly implements quality assurance controls and reviews of all schools, regardless whether they are public or private, in order to maintain the high standards expected of them.
The typical New Zealand child attends Primary School from ages 5 to 10 years, Intermediate School from 11 to 12 years (sometimes Primary and Intermediate Schools are combined) and Secondary School or College (i.e. High School) from age 13 to 18 years.
